Pejla: Building the Bookkeeping Tool I Always Needed

After 12 years of juggling multiple apps just to run my sole trader business in Sweden, I built Pejla — an all-in-one tool for invoicing, bookkeeping, and VAT declarations designed specifically for Swedish enskild firma. This is the story of why it exists and what it does.

Twelve Years of Too Many Apps

I've been running my own business as a sole trader — enskild firma — for over twelve years. In that time, I've learned a lot about my craft, my clients, and what it takes to keep a small business moving. What I never got used to was the admin.

Every month, the same routine: open one app to create an invoice, switch to another to track expenses, log into a third to reconcile my bank transactions, and then wrestle with a fourth to file my VAT. Four separate tools, four separate logins, four separate monthly fees — just to do the basics.

At some point, I stopped accepting that this was just how it had to be.

The Gap Nobody Was Filling

I looked around at the existing options. The big accounting platforms are built for companies with accountants on staff — they're powerful, but they're complex, expensive, and frankly overkill for someone running a one-person business. The simpler tools, on the other hand, tend to cover only part of the picture: invoicing without bookkeeping, or expense tracking without VAT support.

And almost none of them are built with Swedish sole traders specifically in mind. Sweden has its own requirements — OCR numbers on invoices, VAT declarations to Skatteverket, NE-bilaga for the annual tax return, BankID for signing. These aren't edge cases; they're the core of running a legitimate Swedish business. Yet most tools treat them as afterthoughts, if they support them at all.

That's the gap Pejla is built to fill.

What Pejla Does

Pejla is an all-in-one business tool designed from the ground up for Swedish sole traders. Here's what it covers:

  • Invoicing with correct OCR numbers and clean PDF export
  • AI receipt scanning — photograph a receipt and let Pejla handle the data entry
  • Bookkeeping with bank reconciliation built in
  • VAT declarations sent directly to Skatteverket via API — no manual forms
  • BankID signing for documents that require it
  • NE-bilaga support for your annual income tax return
  • Time reporting to track billable hours against projects
  • A tax calendar that keeps you on top of every deadline

Everything in one place. One login. One workflow.

Simple, Honest Pricing

I wanted Pejla's pricing to reflect the reality of running a small business: predictable costs matter. Pejla starts at a flat 99 kr/month — no per-feature tiers, no surprise add-ons. You get the full tool.

Where Things Stand

Pejla is currently in private beta. A small group of sole traders are using it day-to-day, and their feedback is shaping every iteration. The goal is a public launch in 2027.

If you're a Swedish sole trader tired of the same fragmented admin routine I lived with for over a decade, I'd love to hear from you. Pejla is being built for people exactly like us.
